Buffaloes, Bisons and all Bovines — welcome to March.
It’s the month of Labour Day, and fittingly, your fine Club appears to be in labour — about to give birth to another jam-packed stretch of clubby, arty and delightfully loud activity.
February delivered some properly big, sweaty nights. A thumping double-header saw our beloved Clubb Medd upstairs while touring legends ORB rattled the downstairs with their fuzzed-out doom. We also had club favourites Modulations shaking the rafters with live hardware techno, and the ever-lovely Asami washing the room in their shimmering shoegaze glow.
March? More of the same good trouble. Another Doctopus arvo show, fresh electronic excursions from Clubb Medd and Modulations, plus some heavy-hitting rock’n’roll rolling in from over East.
Catch it all in the Club Calendar: the sacred text, the gospel, the unquestioned bible of what’s happening at the Buff.
It turns out the Buff’s foundations are wired directly into one of the most daring rescue missions in international history.
Long before it became our beloved Club, Town Lot 105, yes this very building, was Fremantle’s telegraph office. In the tense days leading up to the legendary Catalpa escape, messages were sent from this site between Fenian onshore operative John Breslin (using the alias “Mr Collins”) and Catalpa Captain George Anthony. Right here, coded communications helped set in motion the dramatic 1876 rescue of the last six imprisoned Fenians, who were spirited away from Rockingham Beach to the United States aboard the Catalpa.
The story stretches across continents, from Fenian political prisoners transported aboard the Hougoumont in the 1860s to their audacious escape a decade later. It’s local history with global consequences, and we’re proud to help bring it back into the light.
These stories (and many more) will be explored at the Fenians Festival 2026 History Symposium, hosted here at the Fremantle Buffalo Club in partnership with Fenians, Fremantle and Freedom, and Limina: A Journal of Historical and Cultural Studies, with sponsorship from the University of Notre Dame Australia.

Shout-outs and Call-outs
Shout out to David for hanging our brand-new solid door separating the vestibule and the stairs. It’s sturdy, handsome, and already doing the quiet work of keeping things just that little bit more civilised. Cheers, David!
Call out to the citrus-rich among us - we’re on the hunt for lemons and limes. If your tree is groaning under the weight, bring a bag down to the bar and keep the Buff’s drinks bright and zesty.
Footy tipping is back!
After a long spell on the sidelines, the Buffalo Club AFL Tipping Comp is making its glorious return — and just in time, because the AFL season kicks off today. So if you’re in, get in quick.
Entry is $40 for the season, with cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, meaning there’s real money (and serious bragging rights) up for grabs. To join, pay your fee at the bar, fill in your tips each week, and drop them into the tipping tin. Or call the Club at 9335 1992. Simple.
Standings will be updated on a poster at the bar so you can track your rise to glory, or publicly spiral.
Don’t miss Round 1. The herd is tipping again.

Bufflings Vol. 4
The Buffalo Club’s bi-monthly live music love letter, BUFFLINGS, is back for Vol. 4 — and this one’s shaping up to rattle the rafters.
Thursday April 2
Doors 7:30pm
Free for members / $15 non-members
This one’s going to be loud.
Headlining are Legs Electric, one of Australia’s finest hard rock outfits, serving up ‘70s-soaked riffs, powerhouse vocals and full Sunset Strip swagger. They’ve shared stages with the likes of KISS and Wolfmother, and they’re bringing that big-stage energy straight into our beloved, slightly sweaty room.
They’re joined by Black River Ransom, delivering dark, driving rock built for late nights and dim lights, and Cöupla Stüds, slinging big riffs, big hair and no-polish pub rock chaos.
Bufflings is about backing live music, backing the herd, and keeping the Buff loud in all the right ways. Come early, grab a drink, and prepare for a full-tilt rock’n’roll night.
Committee Update: New Faces at the Table
A couple of changes to the Management Committee this month. Brendan Foley and Jacob Edwards have chosen to step back and take a well-earned breather from committee duties. We thank them both for their hard work and steady contributions over the past several months, and wish them well with all of their newly discovered free time.
Following their departure, the Committee has elected Veronika “Roni” Neumanova and Oliver “Oli” Krumholz to fill the casual vacancies.
Most members will already know Oli, whether from his hands-on work with the maintenance crew (including helping install the new green leaner in the downstairs bandroom), his contributions to the History Subcommittee, or the occasional shift behind the bar. And of course, he’s a regular with pint-in-hand at the Buff, so you’ve likely shared a yarn or two.
Roni has also been quietly putting in serious work around the Club, from maintenance and essential behind-the-scenes organising to helping run events and supporting staff through some of our bigger nights. If something’s been cleaned, fixed, moved or calmly managed, there’s a fair chance Roni had a hand in it.
If you see either of them around, say g’day, ask them what they’re up to, and give them a well-deserved pat on the back. The Buff runs on volunteers, and we’re lucky to have them.
