George Thompson (1838–1903)[1] was the first Town Clerk of Fremantle, from 1871 to 1873 (although some sources have him as Clerk of Works, with George Bland Humble as Town Clerk from 1871). Thompson was a solicitor[1] (or solicitor's clerk[2]) in England, but on 23 July 1861 in Durham he was convicted of embezzlement and sentenced to transportation to the Swan River Colony. He arrived in 1863, for a term of seven years. His convict number was 7272.[3][2]
He arrived on Clyde on 29 May 1863, and on 5 October the following year married Mary Flindell in Fremantle. They had four children: George (1865), Frederick, Emma Isabella (1867–1904), and Mary (1871–1942).
He was appointed Town Clerk in 1871, and around the same time founded the import merchants firm of Thompson, Sendy & Co.. He was also an auctioneer, and owner of the Pier Hotel (later sold to his brother-in-law J.G. Flindell). "He employed three [ticket-of-leave] men 1869, 1872 (machinist) & 1874 (clerk)".[1]
Travelled to Singapore on 12 March 3 1875, and London 24 January 1882.[2][1] In 1877 he signed a petition regarding discrimination against expirees.[1]
He died aged 66 or 67[4] in 1903 in Port Hedland.[5]
Thompson Road in North Fremantle is named after him in honour of his service as Town Clerk.
No relation to Doug Thompson (Fremantle's longest-serving councillor as of 2025) is known.
