This page is a record of a book relating to Fremantle.

I am using "Erickson" in footnotes as a shorthand way of referring to these publications, and particularly the Bicentennial Dictionary, 1987-88, which is available online.

Dictionary of Western Australians, Volume 5, The Golden Years 1889-1914, 1985, UWAP.

Volume 1 compiled by Pamela Statham and Volumes 2-4 above by Erickson were the basis of the Bicentennial series of four volumes which were published by UWAP in 1987 and 1988.

From the Introduction to the Bicentennial Dictionary of Western Australians:

"The Bicentennial Dictionary is based on material published previously in the four volumes of the Dictionary of Western Australians, the first three of which were produced for the State's Sesquicentennial year in 1979. ... The public was invited to send biographies of people who were resident in Western Australia from the earliest years. The 'cut-off' date for entries was 1914."

Erickson, Rica ed. 1987, 1988, Bicentennial Dictionary of Western Australians, 4 vols, UWAP.

These four volumes were put online by Friends of the Battye Library:

Rica Erickson subsite on the SLWA website. One of the pages explains: "Rica Erickson ... took on the role of general editor of Bicentennial Dictionary of Western Australians pre 1829 to 1888. The dictionary had its origins in the West Australian Biographical Index and in 1987 and 1988 the Bicentennial Dictionary was published to mark the bicentenary of white settlement of Australia in 1988. The four-volume dictionary had entries arranged alphabetically by name and contained all the additional information and corrections in one cohesive series.
In addition to the four volumes of the dictionary compiled by Rica, the Battye Library also holds volumes 5 to 10 that have been published since. Asian Immigrants to Western Australia 1829-1901 (1988), Aborigines of the Albany Region 1821-1888 (1989), Aborigines of New Norcia 1845-1914 (1989), Aborigines of the South West Region (1990), Convicts in Western Australia 1850-1887 (1994) and Far From Home - Aboriginal Prisoners of Rottnest Island (1997)."
