5 Beach Street, Town Lot 260, originally a warehouse, was the Beach Hostel until 2015 when it was closed by the authority as being unfit for human habitation. Address also given as 5A Beach Street as that's what was written on the facade for a long time.
Council decided (28 February 2024) that it would be demolished, retaining only the facade (perhaps).
As the Google Maps photo shows, this is (no longer) a single storey (as so described on the Heritage Council (below). There is what might be called a 'penthouse' on the roof. Also, internal investigation (see Jamet, below) reveals a level between the two, which might at a stretch be called a 'mezzanine', into which cell-like rooms have been crammed. The windows thereof are visible above the larger windows on the ground floor.
Heritage Council:[1]
Physical Description:
Single storey stone and painted brick building which has engaged pilasters through to the parapeted roof and a zero setback from the pavement.
History:
In 1883 the lot was vacant and owned by William Silas Pearse. In 1885 a kitchen and an outhouse were erected on the lot for William Silas Pearse. (Rate books, Fremantle Library)
Statement of Significance:
Historic significance as an example of a nineteententh century stone warehouse building in Fremantle.
In October 2024 it was again before council, and this time it is more likely that the demolition order will be carried out. Since the previous decision, St Pats had bought the building, and their architect and structural engineer declared it impossible to retain the facade.[2]
