G'day Buffaloes and welcome to September.
August was a busy old month at the Buffalo, with barely enough time to put the chairs back where they belong before the next thing kicked off. We started with Postdiluvian: Balcony Rescue, brought to you by Randyhouse Productions with support from Chilli Jam and Freocast. It was a huge day and one of the Club's most successful fundraisers yet. WAM Fest came through on the 15th and filled the place with a fine collection of musicians, dancers and general music enthusiasts. We also got our inaugural Snooker Competition underway, hosted a night of poetry with HEM, and had Unicorn down to launch their new single.
September has plenty more in store. The regular weekly activities are humming along, with comedy and yoga on Mondays, portraiture on Tuesdays, Creative Club and improv on Wednesdays, and Community Kitchen keeping the pots bubbling on Thursdays. Then there's the usual assortment of gigs, DJs, performances and other activities that may or may not have been planned when this newsletter was written.
So have a poke around the Club Calendar and see what's coming up. There should be something in there for everyone, including people who don't know what they want to do until they've already arrived at the Buffalo.
Deep in the Club, tucked away in a secret lodge room, is one of its stranger relics: a throne made of matchsticks.
The story goes that one of the old R.A.O.B. men was a keen smoker who eventually gave up the habit. He apparently still enjoyed the ritual of striking a match and taking a deep breath, even without the cigarette.
So, over time, he began collecting matches and eventually built himself a throne.
Or so the story goes.
Did he collect the matches from the Club, or buy them by the box? Did he build it himself? Nobody seems to know.
The throne remains, though, and that's probably enough evidence for us.
Vale to Members
The Club wishes to note with deep sadness the recent passing of long-time club members Henry Hoie (#91) and Glynn Hathaway (#23).
Henry was a much-loved member, friend and contributor to the Club, having been a member for many years, serving on Committee in 2012. Henry was a favourite at the bar, sharing many stories, laughs, blue jokes and kind advice down the years. Henry was a fiercely independent, strong and kind man who had many hard times but always had a laugh, a listening ear and support for anyone in need. We know that Henry is now with his late wife Brenda and their son Clayton. We send condolences and love to Henry's friends, family, and all who knew him. Henry, we will miss you, but are grateful for our time together.
Glynn's stature and presence in the Club will, too, be missed. Seen often among his friends during the week, the retired seafarer was always willing to share a story or two about his time at sea and his work with the MUA. A loyal member of the Buffalo Club, we send our condolences and wish him smooth sailing.
Shout outs and Call outs
Big bloody thanks to Chloe Bubb and Randyhouse Productions, the best damn promoter in Freo, for pulling together the Club’s biggest fundraiser yet. An enormous effort, and a very good result for the Buff. Chloe, you legend.
Thanks to Committee members Jess and Bec, who have wrangled a grant from the City of Fremantle to produce three pristine, professionally made reels spruiking the Club and spreading the good word of Buffaloism.
Shout out to Juan Mora for hosting some fabulous photography workshops for members, with film supplied by Focus Pocus Film Lab. Snap to it! More workshops are on the way, so keep an eye on Juan’s Instagram for the next one.
Call out for volunteers: Buffin Up The Community. A new monthly project taking the spirit of Buffaloism out into the community, from helping with gardens and basic repairs to lending a hand with organisations supporting people doing it tough. AGM Notice & Call for Nominations
The Fremantle Buffalo Club will host its AGM on Sunday, the 1st of November at 12pm. There will be a sausage sizzle on the day, and all members will be entitled to a free middy.
We want to encourage members who wish to take an active role in the Club to put themselves forward for the volunteer Management Committee. The committee represents the interests of members and supports the Club's volunteers and staff. Please look at the constitution for more details on Club governance.
Below is a summary of the AGM process over the next few weeks:
Committee Nominations: Committee nomination forms are available from Club staff. Members can nominate by emailing the Club Manager at manager@freobuffclub.org or by lodging with Club staff. Committee nominations will be received until Thursday, the 22nd of October, at 11.59pm. If there are not enough nominations to fill the 8 positions, nominations can be accepted from the floor on the day of the AGM. There's a link to nomination forms at the bottom of this email.
Member Voting: Absentee voting forms for the AGM will be posted at the Club and emailed to all members by 9am Tuesday, the 27th of October. Absentee votes can be received up until 11.59pm on Saturday, the 31st of October. Absentee voting slips must be handed to staff in a sealed envelope with your name, membership number and an apology for the non-attendance handwritten on the outside of the envelope and signed by you.
Motions Proposed: There will be motions for constitutional amendments to be made at this upcoming AGM. Members will be asked to vote on each. Please see the full list and details on the Club notice board.
Agenda Items: Please submit any additional agenda items by 6pm Thursday, the 22nd of October, if you wish them to be included in the AGM agenda, which will be posted at the Club on Saturday, the 24th of October.
On the day: The AGM will include short speeches from prospective committee members and a report to membership from the Club Convener. On the day, hard copy financial summaries will be provided to members for the years 2025–2026, as per the Club Constitution.
