Buffaloes, it’s Springtime!

After a long winter of wet streets and the basement doing its best impression of a subterranean creek, the sun is back, the days are longer, and the Club is ready to come alive with all the colour and chaos of the new season.

August gave us a taste of what’s to come. We kicked off with a double-header for the ages: upstairs, the delicate folk stylings of Jack Davies, while downstairs, Revolutions DJs brought golden age hip hop classics to life under the watchful eye of our beloved committee-man and part-time DJ Jacob Edwards. By month’s end, we were hosting one of the biggest nights in Club history: a heaving Clubb Medd shaking the jarrah beams upstairs while local legends Datura4 turned the downstairs bar into a storm of boogie, blues, and psychedelic rock.

Now Spring is here, and the social life of the Buff is only growing. Expect more stacked double-headers, a busy calendar of programs and activities, and all the usual antics you’ve come to love. So step into the sunshine, Buffaloes — the beers are cold, the music’s loud, and the herd is waiting. Don’t forget to check the Club Calendar and scroll down for everything that’s blooming this month.

Stop the presses (or at least the photocopier): the History Sub-Committee has officially passed the halfway mark in cataloguing the Buff’s mountain of dusty documents. Don’t even ask about the artifacts — that’s a whole other can of worms. To celebrate, we’re cooking up an exhibition this November to showcase the strange, stirring, and often side-splitting history of the Club.

What have we found? A whole lot of uncanny consistency. The Buff has always been lively, and always a rumour mill. Take this gem from the minutes of 25 June 1961, when the President (what we’d now call the Convenor) had a spray at “…members who were very few [but] who were conducting a whispering campaign in the bar.” Some things never change.

We’ve uncovered grand reforms, like those laid out by President H.E. Long, which shaped the Club’s future. Some still stand today, others were amusingly reinvented for the 21st century. Once upon a time, the Social Committee did what the Events Sub-Committee now does, Bar Ops was a heavyweight with its own seat on the Management Committee, and there was even an Interclub Social Committee — a relic of the golden era when social clubs ruled the daily grind.

Shout Outs & Call Outs

Big Buffalo thanks go out to Banjo, who’s kept our backsides happy with a donation of much-needed bar stools, and to Ben, who saved the basement from turning into Lake Buffalo with a heroic sump pump donation. Extra thanks to Ray for donating drum parts — keeping the Buff beat alive!

Want to see your name on the shout-out list next month?

We’re on the hunt for a handy soul to wrangle our drum gear — think assembling and tuning a second house kit, and giving the first one a bit of love. If that sounds like your kind of fun, drop a line to zanewayman@gmail.com or stevens-kayla@gmail.com

Meanwhile, the Community Kitchen is calling all culinarily-minded Buffaloes to step up as guest chefs. If you’ve got a signature dish and a passion for feeding the herd, give Jack a buzz on 0421 849 675.

And while we’re at it — the Club is dreaming of caffeine. If anyone’s got a coffee machine (ideally a Breville with a bean grinder) to donate, you’ll be fuelling a whole lot of Buffalo mornings.

Bufflings #2 – Friday 3 October

The herd is back at it again! After the wild success of our very first Bufflings, we’re rolling straight into round two — bigger, bolder, and just as minty-fresh. Remember, Bufflings is all about giving back to our members, which means your little mint green card gets you in for free. All the non-Buffaloes out there? They’ll be coughing up $15 at the door. This time the lineup is stacked:

  • Dolly Carton – Perth’s sharpest-dressed tribute act, unearthing forgotten gems from the ’60s to the ’80s. Every set’s a party, no Dolly Parton required.
  • Flooded Palace – Todd Pickett’s latest project, fusing smoky vocals with country-folk grit and classic rock swagger.
  • Harmony Romsloe – Honest indie folk-rock that tells raw stories of love, family, and growing up Aussie.
  • Buff 2 Buff DJs – Member DJs tag-teaming on the decks all night. Got some tunes to spin? Contact us at gigs@freobuffclub.org to register your interest.

Imaginalia – Winter’s Last Reel

Our winter season of Imaginalia, lovingly curated by Juan, comes to a close with a wild, fantastical flourish: Terry Gilliam’s 1988 fever dream, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.

Join us for the screening on Tuesday 9 September at 7:00pm. As always, Imaginalia keeps it cosy: popcorn for $2 and a room full of Buffaloes ready to dive into another world.

That’s it for the winter program — but don’t fret. The spring season kicks off on 23 September, and Juan has plenty more cinematic wonders lined up.

Back the Dockers at the Buff

Finals footy is here, and the Buff is throwing its weight behind the mighty Dockers. We’ll have every Fremantle finals match live and loud on the projector — and, yes, we’re already assuming we’ll be showing the Grand Final in a few weeks’ time. (Please don’t let us down, boys!)

First up: Saturday 6 September at 5:00pm vs the Suns. Expect hot pies, cheap beers, and the game turned up loud.

Heave ho!

Annual General Meeting (AGM) Coming in November

Once a year, the herd gathers for one of the most important traditions in our calendar: the Annual General Meeting. This is more than just another night at the Buff — it is the moment when members step forward, shoulder their responsibilities, and shape the path of the Club for the year ahead.

The AGM is the centre of our democratic life. It is where members hear how the Club has fared, debate its direction, and elect the Committee entrusted with its stewardship. This is what sets the Buff apart from a private pub — here, you are not a customer, you are a member, with both the privilege and the responsibility of having a say.

To prepare:

  • Check your membership – Ensure it’s current by looking at the back of your mint-green card or logging in using the 'Members Log In' link on our website.
  • Consider nominating – Nominations for the Management Committee will open soon. If you have ideas, skills, and the will to serve, now is the time to put yourself forward.
  • Attend on the day – The AGM is a members-only event. As always, we will share food and a drink in recognition of the community that sustains us.

The date will be announced shortly. Mark your calendars, Buffaloes — this is your Club, and the AGM is your voice in its future.

Earlier Doors, Longer Days

Good news, Buffaloes — the Club is now opening every day from 11:00am. That means more time for morning pints, pool, and putting the world to rights.

Tales from the Toolshed: From green floors to clean pours

The hammers are swinging, the drills are buzzing, and the Buff is slowly but surely levelling up thanks to our maintenance crew of legends. Here’s what’s been happening behind the scenes:

  • Steel dreams – Zane has been turning bargain steel racking into nifty new side tables for the Ladies’ Lounge, as well as more storage down in the basement.
  • Bathroom battles – Tom and Jacob have bravely volunteered to rip out the most cursed section of the Men’s bathroom ceiling. Mold beware, your days are numbered.
  • Schedules & systems – Tom has also drawn up a full maintenance schedule for the Sub-Committee, giving us a roadmap of everything that needs fixing, patching, or polishing.
  • Sound solutions – Brod is upgrading the Ladies’ Lounge sound system with spare modules from the main stage. Expect more clarity, more punch, and less shouting “what?” across the room.
  • Curtain call – A fresh curtain has gone up on the lower left-hand side of the stage, keeping things neat and ready for showtime.
  • Green carpet glory – Anna sourced some lush green carpet (for free, no less!), which was hauled in by Sam, cut by Zane, and installed by Kayla, Ollie, and new volunteer Klaus. Klaus also sealed the upper stage with polyurethane so it won’t rot when the inevitable beer spill happens. Ollie doubled down with repairs on the window and stairwell.
  • Basement channels – Zane continues his fight against the underground creek, cutting more channels to keep the basement dry.

Massive thanks to everyone picking up tools, paintbrushes, and power drills. Without you, the Buff would be a whole lot wobblier.
