G'day Buffaloes.

April is here, bringing Easter—a time of resurrection, rebirth, and (most importantly) a well-earned long weekend. And speaking of rising again, our little Club is bursting with energy like we haven’t seen in decades. Pints are flowing, pool cues are cracking, the Ladies are nailing doubles, bands are shaking the walls, and artists are sketching it all down. This isn’t just a Club; it’s a thriving beast of a thing.

March delivered some unforgettable nights. Jeffrey Lewis took the stage for two intimate, offbeat sets, weaving sharp wit and storytelling into something wholly his own—a folk-punk masterclass that had us hanging on every word. Then, The Peep Tempel stormed in with back-to-back sold-out shows, gritty, relentless, and loud enough to rattle the street outside. The kind of gig that leaves ears ringing and bodies moving long after the last note. And finally, Get Loose 3.0 dropped a funk-driven dancefloor workout, turning downstairs into a pulsing, sweat-soaked groove den that nobody wanted to leave.

Of course, the beating heart of the Club isn’t just on stage—it’s in our members getting stuck in. Whether it's hanging curtains, booking bands, or fixing that one dodgy mixer (you know the one), every little bit keeps this place running.

Keen to get involved? Join the Herd on WhatsApp and swing by our Volunteer Day at 11 AM on Monday, April 21st. It’s how the author of this very newsletter got roped in—and now they only let me out for fresh air and beer runs.

We're leaving out the Old Order fact this months, and instead have an opportunity for members with an interest in the RAOB, that fraternal lodge which originated the club. The lodge has a special meeting in the upper hall on Sunday the 13th of April at 11.30am. RAOB Secretary Graeme suggests that members with an interest can pop their heads in to say hi and learn a little about the RAOB. RSVP Graeme on 08 9495 1472 so he knows what to expect.

The order are not all centenarians but they are not far off. You'll find curiosity regarding the past is often rewarded in interesting ways at the Buff.

Calling all Yogis

Our beloved Veronika is taking a well-earned break from teaching, but fear not—the incredible Lily is stepping in to lead Monday classes from 6–7 PM. Just $10 for members, and the perfect way to stretch, breathe, and reset for the week ahead.

We’re also on the lookout for more instructors to run additional classes at the Club. We offer super affordable rates—just $30 an hour! If you’re keen or know someone who is, drop a line to Ray at socialhall@freobuffclub.org.

New Pool & Coin Champion

All hail Jenna! With skill, strategy, and a touch of sheer brilliance, she’s claimed the title of Pool & Coin Champion this March. But can she hold onto it? If you think you’ve got what it takes to knock her off the throne, chalk up and step up—the challenge is set for 5:30 PM on April 9th. Let’s see who really calls the shots.

If you're interested in participating, sign up here.

Feeding The Herd

Every Thursday, our legendary volunteers serve up a FREE community meal—no strings, just good food and good company. Everyone’s welcome to grab a plate or lend a hand. Serving from 5–7 PM in the Ladies’ Lounge. Because looking out for each other? That’s the Buffalo way.

The meal’s always free, but if you’re in a giving mood, donations are welcome to keep this tradition alive.

Big Buffalo Cheers for Madeleine!

Noticed the Club looking a little shinier lately? That’s thanks to Madeleine, our newest staff member, who’s been putting in extra volunteer hours each week to scrub, mop, and keep this place looking its best. Massive thanks to her—and to all our legendary volies—for helping keep this old beauty standing strong!

Curtains Up – The Buffalo Club Gets a Grand New Look!

The Buffalo Club stage has a brand-new look—our curtains are up, and they’re looking majestic, opulent, and regal—a fitting touch for a grand old club like ours! Thanks to a solid deal from Jane Ashton and her family (who know their way around lighting and theatre), we now have the power to transform our stage for gigs, screenings, and dramatic reveals.

And these aren’t just any curtains. We’re talking 50 to 60 kilos of premium (antique) drapery, wrangled into place with repurposed scaffolding, steel tubing, and sheer buff-headedness. Jane Ashton, whose family has been in the industry for decades, supplied the curtains, while her father, David Ashton, lent his expertise by drawing up a custom lighting plan for the space. (Fun fact: David and Jane once sailed around the world together in a boat named Jane Louise—which Jane recently managed to buy back for a single dollar. Now that's a bargain.)

Meanwhile, deep in the basement…

Thanks to a potent mix of clove oil, bleach, and a positive attitude, the space is looking (and smelling) fresher than ever. The humidity is down, the ventilation is working, and the towering shelves have been cut down to size, transforming into waist-height workbenches.

The old keg shoots—those long, sturdy boards once used to roll barrels into the depths—are also getting a second life as solid, rustic workbenches. Bit by bit, the basement is becoming a practical, usable space once more.

A Huge Thanks to Our Herd!

None of this would have been possible without our dedicated volunteers. During the recent Busy Bee, Eileen and Danny wrangled the basement, while Nidas, Oli, and Emma took on staging and lighting. If we’ve missed anyone, chalk it up to the lingering effects of the clove oil fumes—your work is seen and appreciated!

So next time you’re at the club, take a moment to admire the setup, give a nod to the volunteers, and bask in the sheer grandeur of our new stage—because if these curtains could talk, they’d say, ‘Damn, we look good.’

The glorious, sweat-drenched chaos of Clubb Medd this month

🌿 Member Tickets -$5 🌿

All of the Buff Club's events/programs are hosted by members who share space, lights, and leads in our mildly dilapidated home. We would like to thank all our creatives and give a special mention to those who choose to offer member tickets or host free events and programs. Thanks for supporting a more open social space than may otherwise be the case, and encouraging membership for reasons other than the cheap beer :)

Member tix in the list below and shout outs to Catalpa Céilí, tonight in the upper hall. A celebration of culture and history which feels like a strikingly appropriate fit for the club. Live Irish music, singing, and storytelling, with Torc Céilí Club leading the dancing. Don’t know what a céilí is? No problem! Just follow the crowd, learn a few steps, and pretend you know what you’re doing. Trust us, no one will know the difference!

What’s on the table? Irish Stew, Vegetarian Stew, Cheese Platters, and yes, you guessed it—Guinness on tap (because what’s an Irish night without a pint or two?).

This event celebrates the epic 1876 rescue mission that brought Irish Fenian prisoners out of Fremantle Prison. A huge shoutout to Fenians Fremantle & Freedom for keeping this important story alive.

And yes, it’s family-friendly. Bring the kids, your cousins, the neighbour’s dog, even your mate who can’t dance.
