William Ernest Wray was born in 1864 in England, and arrived in Western Australia from South Australia with his mother Isabella. On 24 May 1894 he married Rose Mary Wray (née Tapper) in Fremantle. He worked for the Education Department as a Truant Inspector, and during WW1 was the Mayor of Fremantle. He died by suicide on 18 May 1928.[1]

Tragic End.
About 3 p.m. yesterday the dead body of Mr. William Ernest Wray, a well Known citizen of Fremantle, and chairman of Fremantle Tramways Board for the past eight years, was found in a storm water drain near the shore, in the vicinity of the Fremantle fish market jetty. There was a deep gash in the throat and a blood-stained razor was found near the body.
Deceased had been associated with the public life of Fremantle for many years.
He acted as truant inspector under the Education Department for many years and when he retired he was elected Mayor of Fremantle, a position he filled from 1914 to 1918. In 1919 he was elected to a seat on the Fremantle Tramway Board, and in the following year he became chairman of that body. He had the unique experience of having attended the swearing in ceremony of every Mayor of Fremantle.
Deceased, who was 62 years of age, is survived by a widow, two married daughters and a married son. Of recent years he did not enjoy good health, and, during the early part of this week, he was in bed for three days.
