ST. JOHN'S RECTORY

St. John's Rectory has been demolished during the week to make way for Goldsbrough, Mort Wool Stores, and with this old building passes much of Fremantle'a history.

Mr. J. K. Hitchcock, of North Fremantle, writes:—

"When the Rev. G. J. Bostock was Rector of Fremantle in the late sixties and early seventies he and the late Dr. H. C. Barnett established a Young Men's Society in connection with St. John's Church. For some time their meetings were held in a room at the Rectory, but in 1869 or 1870 they had accumulated sufficient funds by means of concerts, donations, etc., to build a small hall at the rear of the Rectory, in which to hold their weekly meetings. An excellent library was acquired, and the hall was open every evening as a reading room and gymnasium, besides being used for concerts, lectures, etc. After Mr. Bostock's departure, the Society languished into a kitchen for the Rectory. The hall was built by the late Mr. J. J. Harwood, and under the foundation-stone was placed a bottle containing a newspaper of the day and a list of the members of the society. I am one of the three or four who how survive.

St John's bought a building in Queen Street the same year, to replace the old Rectory.[3] The church decided not to build the new rectory in the grounds of St John's as its churchyard was used by the public.[4]
