This is the southeast side of Queen Victoria Street. Charles buildings (at the right) is still extant. Gesha Coffee is currently on the corner site, where the Shacks garage was in the photo. (Library #2755, Samuel Briggs, 1938)
Andy Shack began the business with an automotive repair shop at 59 Adelaide Street in 1922. Shacks has occupied three or more sites on both sides of Queen Victoria Street. It has finished up on the northwest corner with James Street. Until recently the used car division was on the southwest corner, but that is now yet another council carpark. Shacks sold new Holdens from the beginning of their production (1948?), but now that GM has ceased production of them, Shacks is a dealership only in relation to maintenance.
