(Redirected from Uglieland)

Uglieland was an annual[1] fair that was run on what is now Pioneer Park, from 1922 until 1936. It was sponsored by the Ugly Men's Association, a charitable organisation formed to raise money to alleviate suffering in the community caused by the First World War.

At left is Uglieland in the bend in Phillimore Street c. 1930, with the railway station across the road on the left, Elder Place (with trees!) in the left background. The chimney in the right background is that of Fremantle Gas and Coke.

Tugs-of-war contests were held between various teams, such as those from the tramways, Swan Brewery, Metters, and the railways.[2]

White City (Perth)

The related park in Perth was called White City, Cooee City, or Ugly City. (The different spelling Ugly City/Uglieland is convenient to differentiate the two parks.) White City operated on the foreshore after the first World War until 1929. Photo above from 1922.
