John Wellstead aka Pullen

John Wellstead was born in Rye in 1820, the son of John Welsted, but John Snr died aged 30 and his widow married William Pullen in 1827. John Jnr enlisted in the army as Private Pullen, but once discharged and living in Albany, he reverted to his biological father's name. He was the pioneer of the Bremer Bay area. The small town of Wellstead is named for him.
Diane Oldman has provided all the information available about Pullen's army career, and the Albany historian Robert Stephens has written about him as Wellstead the pioneer settler.
