Thomas Wand had been the Secretary of the (first) Fremantle Club. In 1888 he was the licensee of the Club Hotel (cf. Orient Hotel).
The Evening Times (Fremantle), Fri 11 May 1888, p. 3:
Mr T. Wand, late secretary of the Fremantle Club, has entered upon his new duties as landlord of the Emerald Isle under favourable circumstances, and under his regime the hotel will probably become one of the best known in the colony. It will henceforth be known as the Club Hotel, and amongst changes effected has been the introduction of luncheons from 12 to 2 o’clock, the menu of which would satisfy the most fastidious epicure … in addition to which all the comforts of a modern continental hotel will be provided by the new host.
The Evening Times (Fremantle, WA : 1888) Wed 30 May 1888 , p. 3:
The "Union" club will be opened on Monday night in the new premises attached to the Club Hotel, Fremantle. The alterations made in the premises have been satisfactorily completed, the rooms have been handsomely furnished and renovated, with a private entrance, and everything has been done to ensure the comfort of the members. Mr. Sall has been appointed secretary, and it is intended to hold a banquet to celebrate the opening.
The Evening Times, 5 June 1888, p. 3:
The new Club has commenced under favourable auspices, having good membership, and having secured suitable premises adjoining the Club Hotel, which have been handsomely furnished and decorated by Mr Wand, the landlord. The card and Committee room are situated on the right, while the centre portion of the building consists of a large sitting room with piano, tastefully upholstered, while the walls are covered with numerous oil paintings and other decorations. On the left is the bar, under the superintendence of a competent manager, and further back is the supper room, capable of accommodating a large number of visitors. The premises are possessed of a separate entrance, and with other conveniences for the comfort of the members. The members now number over 35 and the following gentleman comprise the commitee :— Messrs. W. Farmer, W. F. Wald, F. J. Imray, C. B. Hall, C. B. Kidson, H. W. Albert, and Mr. G. W.
