Muir family
MUIR, Andrew, b. 1802 (Scotland), d. 26.8.1874 (Albany), son of Robert & Margaret. arr. 18.1.1844 per Ganges with 4 sons, 2 dtr. & mother-in-law Elizabeth Trail b. 1775 d. 1850, m. (Scotland) Elizabeth TRAIL b. 1800 d. 29.2.1881 (Albany). Chd. Robert Andrew b. 1819, James b. 1822 d. 1910, Mary Agnes b. 1826 d. 1902, Margaret b. 1832 d. 1885, Thomas b. 1833 d. 1926, John Reid b. 1836 d. 1878, Andrew b. 1838 d. 1897. Journeyed from Frem. (overland?) to Albany to join his relative George Cheyne. Spent 5 yrs working for Cheyne at C.Riche. To Albany where he became merchant/ pastoralist with leasehold at "Deeside" Manjimup, "Fern Hill" at Mt. Barker: Lake Grace & Eucla. His sons were employed as managers on the several stations. Employed 26 or more T/L men with his sons at Forrest [Forest] Hill etc.
Robert Muir, the late Perth bookseller, is, I believe, a member of this family.
I would like to know if another is Thomas Muir of Huntershill, who is celebrated in the song by Adam McNaughtan (sung by Dick Gaughan on his CD Redwood Cathedral) – but as he was the only son of another Thomas, a Glasgow merchant, it seems unlikely, as Andrew Muir was from Fyfe. Thomas Muir was transported to Van Diemens Land for sedition.
