Ben Lawver
Ben Lawver was elected in 2021 as a member of the Fremantle City Council representing Hilton ward.
Active in the community as a member of the Hilton Harvest Community Garden and Friends of Samson Park, he is also a founding member of the Hilton Organising Committee and was a leader in the (unsuccessful) effort to try to save the local Hilton IGA.
In his electoral platform, Ben stated that as elected representative he would be a passionate advocate on Council for everyone living in Hilton, O’Connor, and Samson and would work to ensure:
– Local residents have a say in how our community grows and develops.
– Support for locally owned small businesses.
– Services provided by council are reflective of community expectations.
– Better communication between council and residents on issues that matter.

Hilton community farewells their beloved IGA

Hilton residents gathered on Sunday to say goodbye to their beloved local IGA, which is being evicted to make way for the redevelopment of the area.
They’ve lost the fight to block a redevelopment they say will wreak havoc on the traffic in the local area and make them pay more for a reduced choice of groceries.
The proposal was initially rejected by the local council but was passed at the Joint Development Assessment Panel.
Residents shared songs, bbq, and memories while they did their last shop.
Ben Lawver has been at the forefront of the fight to protect the current Hilton town center.
He wants to change the rules so communities have more say in how they’re developed.
“A lot of us are really concerned about the process, and the process is really unfair and unjust when a landowner can shut out a business, run over the wishes of the community, ignore the local council,” Mr. Lawver said.
