James Henty

James Henty (1800-1882) arrived in the colony in October 1829 on the [[../ships/caroline.html|Caroline]] with his brothers Stephen and John, and selected what is now [[../places/bassendean.html|Bassendean]], among other parcels of land. But he was dissatisfied with progress and vacated the land and the house he had had built (later called the 'Old Bassendean Homestead') in December 1831 to start again in Van Diemen's Land, for which he left, with his new wife and indentured servant William Dyer, in January 1832. He later settled in Victoria, in 1851, where he died in 1882.
