James Gallop

James Gallop (1811-1880) arrived 6 October 1829 aboard the Lotus, with his brothers Richard and Edward, all from a Thakeham, West Sussex workhouse. He and Richard were successful in growing vegetables and grapevines. A Gallop (Charles?) had a vineyard (1879-1885? Erickson) where the Leeuwin Barracks is now (until the land is sold). James in the 1870s bought Adam Armstrong's farm containing Dalkeith Cottage (the Armstrong family having named the locality after their place of origin in Scotland) and built a two-storey house (now at 27 Birdwood Parade) now known as [[../buildings/gallophouse.html|Gallop House]]. In 1897 his family had built at 160 High Street a residence called [[../buildings/dalkeith.html|Dalkeith House]]. In 1904 they had built the [[../cinemas/kings.html|King's Theatre]], which was also known as the Dalkeith Opera House, at 52-62 South Terrace. James was the great-great-grandfather of former WA Premier Geoff Gallop. [[../streets/index.html|Gallop Street]] in Hilton named after him.

Edward GALLOP, b. 1814. arr. 6.10.1829 with brothers James & Richard (Lautour's settlers), m. 24.6.1837 (Guildford) Ellen KELLY, widow of Thomas Kelly, b. 1801 (England) d. 25.8.1881 (York), she arr. 1830 per Nancy. Shepherd & employed a Parkhurst boy 1848. Bankrupt 1849. Dep. for S.A. 8.7.1852 per Louisa. His wife went to live at York with her dtr. Mrs John Lott (nee Relly) having transferred the Kelly Frem. Town Lot to her son William Ke1ly. Illit, wife also.
