Sharon Delmege
Sharon Delmege PhD (1953-2023) was, until her retirement, an academic at Murdoch University.
Her husband, Michael Barker, writing as the editor of the Fremantle Shipping News, wrote these words in her memory.
Last Sunday, in the middle of the day, the Shipping News’ editor’s editor - my beautiful wife, Dr Sharon Delmege - peacefully passed away at the Bendat Family Comprehensive Cancer Centre, St John of God Hospital, Subiaco. She was just 70 years of age.
For the six weeks after I advised you in the last edition of The Weekly Edition that we were temporarily suspending the Shipping News while I focussed on a family challenge, your Ed’s Ed remained in palliative care bravely battling the cancer that first presented itself four and a half years earlier.
She approached her challenge with the same fight, verve and determination that she employed in all life’s endeavours. In raising her two children and loving her five grandchildren. In gaining her PhD in 2000, on the topic of the Struggle of Perth’s Aboriginal Fringedwellers. In her academic career at Murdoch University, where she was, before her retirement in 2018, Academic/Program Chair of Communication and Media Studies, among other leadership roles in the School of Media, Communication and Culture.
