Raphael Clint

Nancy Gray, ADB:
Raphael Clint (1797-1849), engraver, was born in Hereford, England, one of four artist sons of George Clint, A.R.A. (1770-1854), miniature-painter and engraver. In 1829 he arrived in Western Australia in the Calista and was appointed to the Survey Department. Although without previous experience he carried out surveys along the Swan, Canning and Kalgan Rivers until 1832, when Governor (Sir) James Stirling reduced his salary. Clint resigned immediately and with his wife Mary Ann, who arrived in the Stirling in 1831, left the colony for Van Diemen's Land, where he was appointed temporarily to the Survey Department. ...

Clint arrived in Western Australia on 5th August 1829 on the [[../ships/calista.html|Calista]]. He was appointed Clerk to the Surveyor-General in October 1829. He accompanied Robert Dale to the Stirling Range in December 1831. He left for Tasmania in 1832 where he worked as a surveyor. Later he moved to Sydney where he worked as an engraver until his death.

CLINT, Raphael (Ralph), b. 1811. arr. 5.8.1829 per Calista. Employed as clerk in Survey Dept. 1829. Married in W.A. & dep. for Tasmania with wife 7.1832. On 23.5.1834 he proposed overlanding stock from N.S.W. In return for land grant. By 1846 was at Toodyay on Dr R. Foley's grant with stock. Appl. for a Parkhurst lad.
