Walter Boyd Andrews

Walter Boyd Andrews (1792-1847) was a 'gentleman'* (Berryman) from Scotland who arrived 1830 on the Warrior with wife Elizabeth, chn, and servants. Granted 5000 acres, he selected 129 of them in the Swan district and another 500 in the Avon. He was Chairman of the Perth Town Trust in 1842 and an agent for the Bank of Australia.

Granted 5000 acres, selected 129 acres Swan district & 500 in Avon district by 1830. Chairman of PerthTown Trust 1842, Agent for Bank of Australia. Appointed to Survey Office 4.1847. Sold most of his property by 1846 when his wife & dtrs dep. for S.A. per Joseph Allen in Dec. Son WaIter joined his mother in S.A. 1849.

  • A 'gentleman' landowner ranked above a 'yeoman' (see Alexander Andrews) but below an 'esquire'. I imagine a yeoman lived subsistently, while a gentleman had a little capital.
