The Western Mail also sponsored various causes for the good of the community. Its editor, Alfred Carson, had founded the Silver Chain Nursing League, which in those days [the 1920s], when social service benefits were not as extensive as nowadays, was a major agency for the charitable care of the sick and the aged, and he had been associated with many other welfare movements.
