The moles, north and south, were constructed in the 1890s to protect the river harbour.

On the end of North Mole (which is much longer than the other) is the red-painted North Mole Lighthouse, which has been in operation since c. 1903. (Red indicates port, as seen by a ship entering the inner port of Fremantle.)

The mole was extended more than once, most recently to allow for a cut to allow entrance to the Rous Head harbour which services Rottnest Island.
