Museums

The global Western Australian state museum organisation is the 'Western Australian Museum'. It maintains buildings in Perth, notably the new (2020) building in Northbridge, and elsewhere, and two in Fremantle, the 'Shipwrecks Museum' in the 1850s Commissariat, and the 'WA Maritime Museum' in a relatively new (2002) structure on the western extremity of the southern wharf of Fremantle Harbour, Victoria Quay.

The most important building complex of the 'WA Museum' is in Kew Road Welshpool. It is where all of the eight millions items are stored that are not on show at the time.

There was a 'Fremantle Museum' in the Fremantle Arts Centre (the former Asylum), but it was closed when the Maritime Museum opened on the South Wharf. There was also a 'Prison Museum' in one of the buildings on The Terrace at Fremantle Prison. Most of the items in both are now probably in Welshpool.

(Apparently the first museum in Western Australia was in Fremantle, but I have yet to find out where and when. Anyone?)

This building used to house the 'Maritime Museum' before it moved to its two new homes. The 'Fremantle Museum' was also here.
