Mary Marshall is a local historian, and the grandniece of William Mills who founded Mills and Ware. She published a history of her family, The Biscuit Factory: Stories of a Fremantle Family, in 2018.

At the mere mention of Mills and Ware, you might recall the sweet smell that wafted from its Fremantle factory for almost a century as Ginger Nuts, Coconut Rings and other freshly baked goodies rolled off the production line.

But if you’re a keen Perth Royal Show goer, you’ll likely remember queuing for a certain little brown case filled with packets of assorted bikkies, according to William Mills’ grandniece Mary Marshall.

“When I was young, the show was the event of the year for all families and once kids got through the entry gate, they’d head straight to the Mills and Ware pavilion,” she said.

“Everyone always tells me they’ll never forget the little case.

“It was a real highlight.”

Mrs Marshall spent 16 years piecing together the story of her grandfather’s brother, Mr Mills, and Henry Ware for her family, culminating in her book The Biscuit Factory: Stories of a Fremantle Family.
