History

The Independent Order of Rechabites was registered as a Friendly society and existed for the mutual benefit of its members. Amongst other functions it provided a form of co-operative insurance for its members. The building was constructed c.1896, when it first appears on the rates record. An additional storey was added to the brick and iron hall in 1904. Extensive alterations were made throughout. The building served as a meeting place, and later adapted for emergency accommodation. The building remained the property of the Order until 1941 when it was sold to A E Howard. It was purchased by Legacy in 1966. Extensions and alterations were carried out in 1964, 1966 and 1980.

Physical Description

Two storey building probably altered to Victorian Georgian style. Formerly rubble limestone brick construction with decorative iron two storey verandah (based on historic photographs).
