Captain John Bamber was a settler in the Swan River Colony.

He was the pilot on the Bombay when she was nearly wrecked on the Iron Pot near Hobart in 1830.[1]

Bamber, Captain John. Arrived on the Nancy in 1830 and was granted a Ship Broker’s licence. He was offered 6,346 acres but declined and left on the Bombay in 1830 for Hobart. Bamber made an excursion to the Collie River in January 1830.

  • The grants of land apportioned on the Swan, Canning, Helena, and Murray Rivers in 1830 were:—On the Swan ... John Bamber, l0 acres, 10th March;...
  • Messrs. John Bamber and W. G. Sams each received 4,500 acres on 26th April.
  • Of all these grantees, in 1837 Messrs. Gellibrand, Henty, Lautour, Bamber and Sams had left the colony.


The Perth gazette and Western Australian journal/Volume 1/Number 4:

On Saturday night last, the house known by the name of "Richmond House" in the neighbourhood of Fremantle, the property of Captain Bamber, was burnt to the ground; it is supposed by some incendiary.
