Maylands Hotel
Guildford Road cnr Rowlands Street
KFC is now on that NW corner. Sic transit gloria mundi.
Also known as Hoffman's Hotel.
The date written on the photo (click/tap) appears to be 21 December 1923. The licensee's name painted on the hotel itself is Beard. The initials may be Ch[arles] D or B.
Keith Cundale, MHPA:
Although it was called the Maylands Hotel it was also known as the Hoffman Hotel named after Morrie Hoffman who bought the hotel in 1922, against the advice of friends, for £130,000. He leased the hotel out three times from 1922 to 1939 before taking over the running of it himself. The hotel was renovated in the 1930s (see picture below). I’ll leave you to decide which façade you prefer!
