LATE MR. GEORGE WILLIS.
An old resident of Fremantle in the per- son of Mr. George Willis passed away at his late residence, 47 Stirling-street, Fremantle, on June 2, at the age of 73 years. Mr. Willis was born at Liverpool, England, and went to sea at the age of 13 years, and continued in that occupation until his arrival m this State about 50 years ago. For a few years he served with the Fremantle Water Police, and apart from his retirement some years ago, he had been in business in Fremantle i'or about 40 years. In his younger days he was an enthusiastic oarsman, and a prominent member of the Fremantle Rowing Club. A quarter of a century ago he also served for a term as a councillor in the Fremantle Council. The Jandakot Agricultural Society claim him as a past president. A family of three sons, six daughters, 37 grandchildren and one great-grandchild survives him.
The large and representative gathering which attended the funeral on Friday afternoon, June 3, clearly demonstrated that during his 50 years' residence in the district Mr. Willis had earned the goodwill and respect of the community. The funeral cortege moved from the residence and proceeded to the local cemetery, where the remains were interred in the Congregational portion. The Rev. Argyll-Saxby, who officiated at the graveside, in the course of a brief address referred in kindly terms to the life of the deceased gentleman.
The chief mourners were Messrs. Wil- liam, Jack and George Willis (sons), G. Booth. G. Strang,. J. Barfield and A. Dykes (sons-in-law), W. White (brother-in-law), George Willis, George, William, Arthur and Stanley Booth and George Strang (grandchildren), and W. and R. Little, and W. and G. White (nephews). The pall-bearers were the Mayor of Fremantle, Mr. F. E. Gibson, Mr. W. Watson, M.H.R. Captain F. Wemyss, and Messrs. A. Scott, C. Groves, H. Herbert, W. Lohoar, and W. Hampton.
Many handsome wreaths were placed on the grave, and numerous communications of sympathy have been received by the bereaved relatives. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. Ar- thur E. Davies and Co., of Fremantle and Claremont.
