Announcement

The Fremantle Society will be holding its AGM in a few weeks, on Monday December 6th, 7 for 7:30pm at the University of Notre Dame Santa Maria Lecture Theatre, 19 Mouat Street Fremantle.

We hope as many Society members as possible will attend. Non-members are also encouraged to attend — you join up on the night for just $20 annual sub, $25 family and $10 concession — there is a proposal to increase the subs for 2011, but if you join before or at the AGM, $20 is all you need pay!

Our guest speaker is Dr Carmen Lawrence, well known for her past and dedicated political contributions to WA and especially to Fremantle. Recently, Carmen was appointed Chair of the Australian Heritage Council, the Federal body responsible for heritage. In this role, Carmen will be addressing the topic “Why List the West Kimberley?” Given recent public debate on the future of this area, it is a timely topic.

The Election of a new Committee will also take place at the AGM. Nominations close on November 22nd and nomination papers will be mailed out to members — you are encouraged to nominate, whether it be for Committee (9 members required), for President (Ian Alexander is stepping down after 4 years in the post) or Secretary (Ruth Belben is not re-nominating for that position). Herald article: "Society makes history"

For the first time in its 28 years members of the Fremantle Society are to vote for a president.

Members will cast their ballots at the Monday December 6 annual general meeting.

Outgoing resident Ian Alexander, who is moving to Albany says the heritage lobby’s top job has never had more than one mndidate since being established by Les Lauder in 1972.

He described competition to lead the group as "a sign of great interest in the society...a healthy sign".

Former Fremantle councillor and mayoral candidate Jon Strachan and former council candidate Lloyd Hammond have thrown their hats into the ring.

Mr Hammond moved to squash rumours his tilt was being backed by former city councillor Laude:

"I haven’t spoken to Les for six months," the Solomon Sheet president told the Herald. "[But] if it was true I wouldn't have a problem with that."

He says a couple of committee members had asked him to stand, after Mr Strachan had accepted a nomination.

He denied there was any animosity: "There's no nastiness or personality issues, it's nice and clean," he said, adding both had also put their hands up for the management committee and would work "happily" together whichever way the vote went.

Both have close ties to Fremantle MP Adele Carles, with Mr Strachan a key member of the former Greens' 2009 by-election campaign team and Mr Hammond married to her media staffer Natascha.

Dr Alexander isn't endorsing either candidate but says there's "a lot of vigorous campaigning going on behind the scenes".

Mr Strachan told the Herald he'd been nominated by a "senior" committee member.

The emergence of rival candidates showed the society was gaining interest and the presidency was seen as "desirab1e" position of community leadership.

He sees a change in the Society's role from protecting buildings to protecting Fremantle’s way of life: "Culture and community," he said.

Artists can't afford to live here. Harbour Theature and Deckchair have problems. These are important tor Fremantie's future."

But that doesn't mean he'd drop the ball on the city's old buildings, he added.

Mr Hammond says Fremantle's heritage buildings still need protection, if not from demolition then from being overshadowed by "parasitic development that detracts from old buildings".

"It’s about being sympathetic to heritage," he said.

The AGM is 7pm in Notre Dame's Santa Maria lecture theatre on Mouat Street. Former WA premier and federal Freo MP Carmen Lawrence will give a talk on heritage listing the West Kimberley.

Declaration of Ballot for 2011 Committee

Report of Chief Returning Officer, Anne Brake.

The Returning Officers were Anne Brake, David Hawks and June Hutchison.

The constitution requires that all nominations must be received 2 clear weeks prior to the day of the election. The returning Officers advise that the nominations received by the Hon. Secretary by 22nd November were as follows:

President
Dr Lloyd Hammond and Jon Strachan (one position available). There being two nominations, a secret ballot has been conducted for the election of the President. I declare Jon Strachan has been elected President of the Fremantle Society for 2011
Hon Treasurer
Mr Jack Turnbull (one position available). There being only one nomination I declare Jack Turnbull elected as Hon Treasurer of the Fremantle Society for 2011.
Hon Secretary
One position available. As there were no nominations for the position of Hon. Secretary this position shall be filled by the incoming Committee from its members.
Committee
The following members nominated for election as members of the committee: Michael Adeane, Henty Farrar, Nicolas Gurr, Cathy Hall, Lloyd Hammond, Roel Loopers, Jon Strachan, Don Whittington, and Sam Wilson. Jon Strachan has withdrawn his nomination as he has been elected President. As there are 9 positions available, I declare the remaining 8 persons as duly elected Committee Members. One of these members will be elected Vice President by the Committee at its first meeting. This leaves one position unfilled and the incoming Committee will fill this vacancy. The committee also has the power to co-opt up to 3 Society Members to the Committee and one of these members could then be elected by the Committee to act as Hon. Secretary.

— Anne Brake, Chief Returning Officer.
