THE STALKER FAMILY 6.45PM
The Stalker Family is a new side project for Kill Devil Hills vocalist Brendon Humphries, along with good friend (and ex-Lamia screamer) Kate Kelly - think Nancy and Lee playing Leadbelly n bluegrass n Bee Gees.
In a shed in Fremantle, prepare your work area well, make all surfaces relatively clean and uncluttered, turn the gas to low: now mix 1 part punk (ex-Lamia siren Kate Kelly), 1 part croon (the Kill Devil Hills vocalist Brendon Humphries), 1 part guitar, 1 part glockenspiel, 2 parts harmony, mix well, add spirit(s) to taste as required = The Stalkers.
THE JUSTIN WALSHE FOLK MACHINE 8PM
The Justin Walshe Folk Machine deliver a formidable and grand voice in Australian Folk Rock. (WA).
"The Justin Walshe Folk Machine's live show sits somewhere between a campfire yarn, a sea shanty, bush poetry and a country rock hoedown. In a one hour set you might get an historical anecdote about convicts and shipwrecks, croony, delicate tales on love and whisky (in no particular order), and plenty of barnstorming folk rock to tie it all together.
The Justin Walshe Folk Machine from Fremantle take you on a rollicking journey through the vast reaches of Australia's past on the back of blistering musicianship with tales of whisky, shipwrecks and hapless desert-bound explorers. Epic, original, driving and entrancing, The Justin Walshe Folk Machine deliver a formidable and grand voice in Australian folk-rock.

TASHI HALL 6.45PM
Tashi is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who is passionate about creating her own style of indie/upbeat acoustic/quirky rock.
Tashi performs with guitar and vocals, engaging audiences with her very friendly personality and professional musical approach. However, in recordings she layers guitar, drums, bass, keys/piano, violin, percussion and vocals to create the sound of a full band.
Tashi has filmed and released three music videos for her songs 'Blackout', 'Blown Away' and 'Feel Good' and has received radio airplay in Perth as well as the UK.
DAVEY CRADDOCK AND THE SPECTACLES 8PM
Davey Craddock & The Spectacles Bio
Over the past 18 months award-winning guns from all corners of Perth's powerhouse music scene have banded together to back indie folk wonder Davey Craddock. Having played solo in WA for the past eight years, the lyrically-dextrous troubador's songwriting has long been shared and savoured by those in the know. However, slowly but surely, a crack team of players has been assembling in sheds, seaside studios, pubs and lounge rooms to expose Craddock's songwriting to a wider audience.

BILLIE ROGERS AND THE COUNTRY GENTLEMEN 6.30PM
Named after Billie Holiday ... it's no wonder this Perth-born songstress was blessed with such a soul-stirring voice.
Billie Rogers has lived, breathed and been enveloped by an eclectic mix of soul, reggae, blues, rock and country music since she leapt from the womb. While other children spent their weekends painting Warhammer and
learning to crochet their teddy a vest, Billie opted to hang out at the pub, drinking shirley temples and watching her dad's zydeco band play—soaking up an insight into the weary life of an artist.
TOM FISHER AND THE LAYABOUTS 7.30PM
Tom Fisher and the Layabouts, led by Tom Fisher son of local muso Jim, the Layabouts are a high energy alt country, blues rock from some of Freo's finest musicians. When realising their mutual love for singing sad songs on sad guitars, Jane Azzopardi and Chloe McGrath created Childsaint. Making melodies and scribbling lyrics for the love of love, addiction, alcohol, god?, sex, hate, the better singers, the crazy things, and sarcasm.
"Spilling their guts out on recorded tape, snarling right up to the microphone and making grim, gritty words sound angelic ... It's beautiful, dirty and harsh at its very core." - Neu! Magazine (UK)

Here & Now Jam Band from 6.00pm
So-called because each performance is completely unique and authentic, we are an amorphous collective of musicians who come together on an ad hoc basis to jam together for the love of it. If we succeed in entertaining others in the process, that is a bonus.
Born in the front room of Dave's place, we feature such instruments as guitar, banjo, squeezebox, harmonica, bass, mandolin and didgeridoo. Our line-up changes from time to time as more of our muso mates happen along and join in. We also encourage audience participation and we love getting requests (if we don't know it, we'll fake it!). If you feel like dancing, we will do our best to accommodate.
While our style can be loosely described as 'bush-band' because of the informality, heavy 'Aussie' content, Anglo-Irish influence and country flavour, we also play blues and folk tunes from all over the globe. We even play tunes we write ourselves, so each performance is potentially a world premiere of a new song. At the end of the day though, we are really just doing it to have a good time with friends. So come along and join the fun.

Empire Blues
Empire Blues is a well-established, dynamic Blues Power trio whose primary influences come from the British Blues invasion of the 1960s.
Formed in 2005 the band features prominent Western Australian blues musicians Andrew McIlroy (guitar/vocal), Alan Dawson (bass guitar/vocal) and Frank Shinell (drums and definitely no vocal). All three musicians have been stalwarts of the Perth music scene for many years and have previously played in some of Perth's best-known blues bands.
High-energy electric blues is very much the staple of the band, which has a well-earned reputation for lifting the roof off many a blues venue. The band also brings together more traditional elements to many of its songs through the use of Dobro slide guitar and fretless bass for an acoustic (but not roots) blues feel.Together with great original tracks from their debut CD and their second work in progress album, the band also covers material from The Animals, John Mayall, Eric Clapton/Cream,The Rolling Stones, Robin Trower and many other great British blues artists.
In recent years Empire Blues has played at the Blues at Bridgetown Festival (2008/09/10), the Yanchep Inn Blues Festival, and has supported international blues artists Eugene Bridges, Hans Theesick and Jan Preston. Other supports include Ian Moss, Dave Hole, Louis King and the Liars and countless others. Andrew has also performed at Buddy Guy's Legends Bar in Chicago USA.
Real SingFriday 1 November
The Real Sing: With A Little Help from My Friends
The Real Sing presents a musical Journey through the 60s and 70s.
Come and enjoy the show as we explore the dichotomy of the Beatles sound versus the groovy West Coast sound as epitomised by the Mommas and Pappas.
For your enjoyment and elucidation, The Real Sing has drawn, from amongst its multi-faceted ensemble, on-the-spot reporters, historians and social commentators. Each presents, from their own experience, an insight into the marvellous musical maelstrom that was the 1960s.
Along the way you'll hear hits of the era by The Righteous Brothers, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, The Drifters, and of course The Beatles and more ...
The Real Sing are an accomplished a cappella group headed up by our Musical Director Coralie Kan. We have sung together for many years at various festivals and events throughout Western Australia and we look forward to performing at The Fremantle Workers Club on November 1st, being part of The Fremantle Festivall. Tickets $20 available from the Club (contacts below) Bodkins Bootery (High St) or online from Ticketbooth.

The Sustainables: Concert and Dance to Fine Freo Acoustic Music
The Sustainables: Freo Workers Club, Saturday Nov 2nd, Henry St Fremantle 7.30 pm
Some years ago, at a weekend uni retreat at Toodyay, Rachel Armstrong (fiddle, ukulele) and Gary Burke (dble bass, uke & guitar) started playing some music on the porch. We laughingly called ourselves "The Sustainables". Now we're still playing music but we've joined up with Rick Martin (sculptor, painter) on guitar and ukulele, Peter Grayling (botanist) on cello, & John Reed (geologist) on mandolin & cittern. We all sing. From little things big things have grown.
It's an un-loud acoustic music with a variety of original, traditional and contemporary songs, peppered with light but traceable legacies from Bungarra and R'n'F (for those old enough to remember).
We're playing at the Freo Workers Club in Henry St on Nov 2nd, as part of the Freo Festival. The last gig we had there was a lot of fun. So if you're in need of an evening that begins with a bit of quiet harmony, then surges into reckless abandon on the dance floor, this could be for you: Grab someone you like and come along. We'd love to see you there.
Concert sound by Aidain d'Ademhar and Fremantle PA Hire.
Admission $15 members, $20 guests. You can eat at the Billy Clare Cafe at the Club from 5.30 and ensure you get a good seat.

Jook Joint Band
jook joint logoThe Jook Joint Band is a jug band at heart and they have been wowing audiences with their snappy renditions of old time blues, skiffle and ragtime music in and around Western Australia for the past eight years. They like to call the music they play 'dancing blues' as they make it their aim to get their audience tappin' their feet and slappin' their thighs.
They have played at the Bridgetown Blues Festival, Fairbridge Festival of World and Folk Music, Perth Blues Club and throughout the state at many other festivals including the Canning Show, East Fremantle George Street Festival, Fremantle Heritage Festival, Waroona Show, Mukinbudin Spring Festival, Folk and Roots @ Perth Cultural Centre to name a few.
They are a five piece band and play a variety of instruments in the tradition of jug bands ranging from the jug, washboard, ukulele, 6 & 12 string guitars, acoustic bass, stand up drums and harmonica. These good ol' boys have been adding to the texture of the Western Australian music scene for some time now and want to share their unique style of music with an increasing audience base.
They have just released their new double EP album, Jookbox Music. For this album they have put down eight songs, four originals and four covers. The originals range from the catchy whimsical "Gliding Penguins" an ode to penguins that fly, to "Jook Joint Jive" a knee-slapping tilt to the band's jug band roots. The covers include the lively "Don't Sell It, Don't Give it Away" a song that had many up and dancing to it in the juke joints of the 1930s and still has that effect today, and "Denomination Blues" a swinging 1920s gospel blues number that you wouldn't play in a church.
Find venue details and band info on their website: www.jookjointband.com where you can check out videos and samples of their music. For more information, promo requests or to set up an interview contact Bill Johnstone on 0411 134 808.

fossil rockClub Centenary Celebrations Begin
On 2 February 1914 the Club was established when it bought its first premises, the former Lodge's Hotel, at 1 Henry St. The Founder and first President was Billy Clare, the publisher of the Fremantle Advocate. He is still remembered in the Club by the Billy Clare Club Cafe, and a memorial mirror, and a photo of him in the lobby. The Workers Club opened 5 June 1914 when it acquired a trading licence, so most of our Centenary celebrations will be from May onwards and will coincide with the Fremantle Heritage Festival. But today we begin to celebrate ONE HUNDRED YEARS of the Fremantle Workers Social and Leisure Club.
Dance all afternoon to Fossil Rock — an outstanding 1950s/1960s rock'n'roll party band fronted by former Troupador Rick Selby. This is classic rock and nostalgia.

Lewis Clayton and the Cyclones
The Cyclones ... Kicking up a Storm
Lewis Clayton and The Cyclones, formerly The Sunsets of Shakin' Stevens and The Sunsets fame, unveiled their new name at the beginning of 2013. The Cyclones, fronted by 24-year-old guitar sensation Lewis Clayton, plan to kick up a storm in the coming months. With gigs already booked in the UK and Australia, and a new CD on the way, the future is looking great. Freeing themselves of the restrictions of the old Sunsets brand, they have now expanded their repertoire to include not only a comprehensive catalogue of mainstream 50s and early 60s Rock n Roll, but also a selection of rockabilly numbers, as well as a little bit of country!
The Cyclones revisit those crazy, shakin', rockin', boppin' days of the 50s and 60s, recreating the sounds that changed popular music forever. The four-piece line-up packs a punch, delivering an exciting mix of rock n roll music which ranges from Elvis, through to Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Fats Domino and Eddie Cochran. There is most definitely something for everyone here!
All the classics will be there, along with fresh material including originals penned by The Cyclones. It's the full 1950s rock 'n' roll experience – rockabilly, jump jive, that great Bill Haley dance beat … big hits and top bops, performed as only The Cyclones can.
The Cyclones can be contacted via email:

Rockabilly in Fremantle!
Presented by Perth Swing Dance Academy and the Fremantle Workers Social and Leisure Club
Join the Perth Swing Dance Academy for an afternoon of Rockabilly with a live band and an open bar!
Starting on Sunday 23rd March the Perth Swing Dance Academy will present a series of drop-in Rockabilly classes at Fremantle Workers Club. The classes will be held from 12:30pm to 1:15pm and the first one will be FREE! Then straight afterwards from 1:30 to 5pm there'll be a live band that you can dance to!
Rockabilly (also known as Rock'n'roll) evolved out of Lindy Hop to suit the changing music and social trends of the 1950s. The 1950s was a time of upheaval, restlessness and rebelliousness. The music changed, became daring and wild, and teenagers rebelled against their parents. They didn't want to dance like their parents! Partner dancing became characterised by staying on the spot, with follows pushing off their leads, and some of the music no longer swung, it was straight!
Rockabilly has most of the same moves as Lindy Hop except it has simpler footwork and the connection is strong and bouncy. Come and learn this vintage dance. If you feel like you've got two left feet then this class is also for you. It's a simple dance and it will give you confidence on the dancefloor and bridge the gap to learning more challenging cool swing styles!
WHERE: Fremantle Workers Social and Leisure Centre, 9 Henry St
WHEN: Beginners class 12:30pm, every Sunday

COST: First week FREE, subsequent weeks $10

Bluegrass Parkway with Coolgrass: Strange Bedfellows
WHOEVER heard of bluegrass Mozart, Julie Andrews or Queen performed on a banjo? How about Michael Jackson getting down to that hoedown beat?
Meet Coolgrass, the Victorian bluegrass band who set out to break all the bluegrass rules and they are coming to the Fremantle Workers Club Monday April 28.
Mandolin player Bruce Packard said the band had been having outrageous fun together for ten years. "One of the things we really enjoy is bringing our music to new audiences and watching their faces as we delight them with the unexpected," he said.
The band are no slouches when it comes to picking and singing, perhaps just a little bent when it comes to interpretation!
During their ten years the band has performed at most folk festivals in Australia and New Zealand to much acclaim and now it is Fremantle’s turn.
Supporting Coolgrass will be local bluegrass legends Bluegrass Parkway.
Bluegrass Parkway have been performing throughout Australia, New Zealand and the US for the past 26 years and during that time they have developed a reputation as Australia's premier bluegrass band.
With tight instrumentation as well as great three and four part harmonies, the band presents bluegrass in its most traditional style.
Australia's best straight bluegrass meets Australia's most bent Bluegrass - should be a fantastic, funny and entertaining evening.
Tickets: $25/$20 members in advance from the Club, Bodkins Bootery or Ticketbooth/$25 on the door—and they are available

The Trial of C.Y. O'Connor
C.Y. O'Connor has become a legendary figure in Fremantle, revered for creating Fremantle Harbour in 1897. In March 1902, exhausted by overwork, libellous criticism and lack of parliamentary support, O'Connor rode along the sands of South Beach and there took his life. This play imagines a different ending—one played out in the courtroom—whereby C.Y. O'Connor is placed on trial to answer the accusations levelled against him during his life and beyond it.

== More than 'a mere drinking shop'?
A story of the Fremantle Workers Social and Leisure Club 1914-2014 ==
The Fremantle Workers Social and Leisure Club, founded in 1914, was based on the ideals of Billy Clare who declared that 'our club never has been, and never will be, a mere drinking shop. It was founded upon high ideals...' What were these ideals and how has the Club reflected these over the last 100 years? Notre Dame historian Dr Jane Davis is writing a history of the Club and has these answers. Come along and hear about how the Club, through its varied activities, has lived up to Clare's ideals and learn about a few of the scandals that occurred along the way.

The Rogues
The ROGUES are a Pogues 'tribute band'. The ROGUES play a gut-withering and hard-driving brand of folk-rock, drawing upon (with the greatest respect) the timeless Pogues repertoire of traditional, rebel and contemporary music and song. There's relentless rhythm—sublime, yet coarse verse—vocal gymnastics and—instrumental prowess. This is a pub band in the true sense.
Now—seriously, for a moment—history shows that the Pogues were born out of the nihilistic Punk music movement of the mid seventies in the Thatcherite United Kingdom. They fused the punks' anti-establishment stance and disrespect of tradition with (ironically) a love and affection for the songs, tunes and melodies of Ireland. The Pogues are perhaps defined by their lead singer, Shane McGowan - known for his tremendous songwriting, his terrible teeth, his constant drunkenness and his incorrigible disregard for things in general.
Dance, singalong, dance, shout, dance some more, and yell. The more you give the more you'll get. And go home feeling happy. Then come back again.
The ROGUES are:
Nick 'Ahoy There' Turner: Vocals, guitar, mandolin, bodhran, Admirable Shenanigans
John 'Fingers' Reed: Vocals, cittern, General Shenanigans
Sam 'Chop-Sticks' Reed: Vocals, drums, good looks
Tim 'Tim' Tim: Accordian, more good looks
Stuart 'Blurry hands' Paterson: Vocals, flutes, whistles
Dirty Pierre Kardinya: Bass, hair

Fremantle has a long history of nurturing musical talents and delivering some of Australia's best musical exports. This July, the Hidden Treasures winter music series will celebrate Fremantle's vibrant musical culture by converting unique spaces along High Street into live music hotspots to showcase new and established artists.
Presented by the City of Fremantle, Hidden Treasures is now in its fourth year of creating unique collaborations and dialogues between musicians and music lovers, softening the barriers between performers and audiences.
Four venues in Fremantle's West End will play host to Hidden Treasures every Thursday in July, including Fremantle Workers Club, The Navy Club, The Buffalo Club and new addition - the PS Art Space. One $10 ticket will grant a night's membership to all four venues, which will host staggered performances so that music lovers can wander from one music hot spot to the next.
Highlights of this year's Hidden Treasures series are many and varied, including a performance by Fremantle super group Midfield Legends at The Navy Club on July 17 featuring members of The Triffids, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The Stems and the Holy Rollers. PS Art Space is also set to host a not-to-be-missed gig on July 24 by Gutterville Splendour Six who formed in 1995 and released one critically acclaimed EP before disbanding in 2000, with members of the band then going on to found other renowned acts such as The Drones and the Kill Devil Hills.
For the first time in Hidden Treasures history, 2014 will see the winter music series expand into new territory with Placement - an exhibition of historic band posters by renowned artist Nikolai Graham at PS Art Space on July 24.
Other standout events include Jam Nation presented by Catch Music at The Workers Club on July 10 and July 17. A community jam session open to experienced and aspiring musicians, Jam Nation invites music lovers to come along with an instrument in hand (or pick one up on arrival) to play along with other like-minded aficionados.
Die hard musos and fans won't want to miss out on performances and DJ/producer discussions Shifting Kingdoms and Play Something We Can Dance To, on July 3 and July 10 respectively. The discussions, hosted by Aarom Wilson, will take place at PS Art Space and will address the ins and outs of WA's vibrant electronic, DJ and dance music scene. A retrospective of Fremantle dance music - Back To Phillimores And More, will be hosted by DJs Paul Malone, Cooker and Chad on July 31, also at PS Art Space.
Attracting a music-loving audience along with those curious to make a new musical discovery, Hidden Treasures provides the rare opportunity to watch and mingle with an eclectic mix of artists who all have one thing in common – Fremantle.

Close Harmony
Singing together is an ancient art; it’s also modern medicine. The Close Harmony Choir of Subiaco has been making musical medicine for eight years with a mix of world and folk a cappella. It’s a simple formula and we invite you to join us to listen to old wisdom wrapped up in beautiful harmonies.
The choir will be showcasing some of its repertoire under the musical direction of Brian Dawson this week at the Fremantle Workers Club on Friday 17 October 7.00-7.30 pm. They will also be launching their new logo ready for their debut performance at the Dunsborough Songfest in November this year.
Friday 17 October
Two's a CrowdTwo's a Crowd are Nick Turner on guitar/vocals and Lorraine Bastow on bass guitar/vocals. Nick is well known to the club as lead singer of The Rogues. In Two's a Crowd he and Lorraine perform a more rock/ blues/ country set of songs, drawing material from Australian standards such as The Church, The Triffids, Paul Kelly and Bernard Fanning through some iconic American artists including Creedence, Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen (OK he's Canadian!) and REM to English classics such as David Bowie and The Rolling Stones. As well as some quirky one-hit-wonders you forgot to remember. Their sets are varied, they can make you want to get up and dance and they can make you want to sit back and listen. One thing for sure is that they are always entertaining! |

Ronnie DompRonnie Domp has been around for a while—15 years in Perth playing in a number of bands, duos and also playing solo. When he plays solo, you can expect to hear the songs of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Cat Stevens, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Donovan, James Taylor, Neil Young, Jethro Tull and many other artists/songwriters that you love. Ronnie plays these songs giving them the flavour of the originals, without trying to copy them. He plays them all with passion. He does play some blues (he has a husky voice), and can be funny — when the time is right! If you know these artists and their songs you should like 'em played by this dude. |

The Zydecats
File:Freotopia clubs freoworkers images zydecats5.jpg
The Zydecats, legendary Freo band who played Clancy's on Sunday evenings for nineteen years, are back at the Workers Club at SFFC Sunday 22 June.
Founding members of the Zydecats , Lucky Oceans, Bill Rogers and Kent Hughes, have been playing together since 1992 and write most of the songs performed by the band. Ric Eastman (on drums) and Graeme Bell (on bass) make up the five-piece band.
From the start of the Zydecats, the idea was to combine Zydeco with 'Cat' music - swing, jump blues and rockabilly, plus any other style that suited the line-up, including rock and roll, country blues, soul, R&B, Cajun and New Orleans R&B. The music produced by these highly talented musicians is fantastic for dancing as well as listening.
The Zydecats played every Sunday evening at Clancy's Fish Pub for 19 years. They moved the session to the Fremantle Workers Club in Henry St in June 2014 and performed every Sunday evening until the Workers Club moved to South Fremantle Football Club at the end of November 2014.
Their first session at South Fremantle Football Club in September was amazing. Over 200 fans turned up and they loved the dance floor. Don't miss this second opportunity to enjoy the Zydecats at the Workers' present home.
