The Fremantle Caledonian Society was founded in 1888.
In 1903 they built the Caledonian Hall on James Street, with Donald McDonald Mckay, F McDonald and John Hector being instrumental in its construction.[1]
In 1907 they commissioned the water fountain on Esplanade Park, in memory of "Fighting Mac" Major General Sir Hector McDonald. It cost £80. In 2014 the water fountain was restored, and a explanatory plaque added.[2]
