Greetings Buffaloes,
Welcome to November. A month for breathing in the last of the pollen and planning the chaos of the holiday period. This months old order Buffalo fact:
At the time the RAOB originated, charities and community associations were responsible for many initiatives providing basic welfare for those without the means to. Over time, many of these functions were taken up by government to form the modern welfare state.
Many of these charities and associations continue, including the Red Cross, the Lions, and Rotary clubs. The history subcommittee this month offer us the RAOB Absent Brother's Toast:
To those by sickness laid aside,
Or through adversity,
May they soon be restored to health
Wealth and prosperity.
Here in this lodge we brothers pledge,
To do the best we can
To aid and succour those in need,
To a brother and a man.
Love of fellowship has expanded, and we may imagine the generations of women pursuing similar aims who had a laugh in the parquetry lounge of the Buff while the old boys conducted their meetings upstairs.
Committee
Our excellent manager Kevin and his wonderful wife Caroline attended the Chamber of Commerce awards last month, where we came fairly close to winning something. We'll likely have better luck next time, but it was a fun exercise in being the odd duck on the ballot.
The AGM details will be emailed this week. The date is Sunday the 24th of November at 12pm. Nomination forms are at the bar for those interested in volunteering for committee, and the financial summaries will be posted at the club the week of the AGM.
The Committee have been reviewing the constitution and club history, and believe there are a number of points in the constitution that have undermined the club. The most significant is that the role of committee secretary is blended with the role of club manager.
The committee will ask members to vote on a number of constitutional changes at the AGM, clarifying how staff, committee, and volunteers work together. These motions will be posted in detail at the club on Friday the 8th.
Please take some time to read these to be informed for the vote and learn about how the club works. The Buff is going to need a lot of members willing to take up the cause in the next few years, and the constitution is our basic guide.
Membership
With the AGM here, you'll need your member number for voting. Member cards are placed behind the bar for pickup within the fortnight of signing up.
If you're yet to sign up, and you'd like to vote in the AGM, Tuesday the 19th will be the last opportunity for committee to confirm new members.
Membership is $50 per year ($30 Concession).
Email Kevin at manager@freobuffclub.org if you can't track your card and need to find out your member number.
Social Hall
We've hosted our first exhibit opening over the weekend, with ten artists presenting works in the space. Congratulations to curator Ruby, and to all the artists and volunteers involved.
Youth night didn't quite get off the ground and the folks running it have decided to try kicking it off with an all age festival next year. Details to come.
We've now put the calendar of events on the website to give some clarity around what's on. Here's a summary of community programs:
- _Mondays and Wednesdays 6pm-7pm _ Yoga ($10)
- _Tuesdays 6.30pm-9pm _ Life Drawing ($20)
- _Tuesdays 5.00pm-7pm _ Group Portraiture (downstairs+free)

- _Thursday fortnightly (7th, 21st) 5pm-7pm _ Community Meal (free)
Volunteer Shout Out
Much appreciation to Rory for getting temporary walls built and lighting in place for the exhibition. They're super handy. Thanks to Eileen and Rosie for organising the green rooms new lighting. Thanks to Ollie for pitching in as an event volunteer, and to Emily and Jon for keeping hope alive in the online world.
If you’re interested in helping out at the club talk to committee or Kevin.
Volunteers meet in the Buff's upper hall each month to get oriented. This month’s is 11am on Sunday the 17th.
