The Aga Khan was the 49th imam of Nizari Isma'ilism from 1957 until his death in 2025. He established the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) in 1967, and was involved in the Italian America's Cup syndicate and their yacht Azzurra which competed in Fremantle in 1987.[1]

He is also known in Fremantle for his purchase of, among a shed full of other things, the bar that was once in Trades Hall (the home of the Trades and Labour Council). The story goes that he left Fremantle after the Cup and didn't take everything, and so "a few quick-thinking [Buffalo Club] members salvaged the bar, lugged it upstairs, and installed it in the social hall, where it still stands today."[2]
